Historic Landmarks And Faith Heritage
First settled in the 1820s as Mount Gilead Cross Roads, Ben Hill features deep historic roots in Fulton County. The historic Judge William Wilson House, located on Fairburn Road, stands as one of Atlanta's few surviving antebellum buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Faith institutions hold a prominent position in the area, starting with Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, which was the first Methodist congregation established in Fulton County. Ben Hill United Methodist Church, situated at 2099 Fairburn Road, developed from Wesley Chapel and grew into the largest African American congregation in the United Methodist Church. In 1918, the Ben Hill Circuit erected a church parsonage along Campbellton Road to serve local congregations. A post office established near Campbellton Road and Fairburn Road after the Civil War helped cement the Ben Hill name across the community.
Residential Housing And Neighborhood Dining
Ben Hill housing predominantly comprises New Traditional single-family homes and townhouses constructed during the 2000s and 2010s. Family homes in the neighborhood typically span from 2,500 to 4,000 square feet, offering more interior space than many other Atlanta properties. Campbellton Road forms the primary corridor for local dining, hosting roadside eateries such as Ben Hill Grill for wings and fried fish. Dining options along Campbellton Road also include Senegalese dishes at Bamba Cuisine and Caribbean staples at Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Restaurant. On Butner Road, music enthusiasts gather at St. James Live for evening jazz and blues performances.
Community Recreation And Annual Gatherings
Ben Hill Park serves as the central neighborhood outdoor venue, featuring a large recreation center. Athletic facilities at Ben Hill Park include three ball fields, two tennis courts, and outdoor basketball courts. Every year on the last Sunday in July, the community celebrates Ben Hill Day, an annual reunion founded by lifelong citizen Sherard Bunkley. The Ben Hill Day event has expanded to draw 30,000 attendees to commemorate fallen friends and family members. During this summer gathering, local figure Collier Hose organizes an annual charity lean drive for the community.
