Hilly Streets And Residential Architecture
Castlewood was initially constructed along hilly roads including Castlewood, Dover, Edinboro, Mornington, Rhodenhaven, and Rockingham Drives. Subsequent development introduced the two cul-de-sac streets of Arden Close and West Arden. Architectural styles across the neighborhood range from original 1950s midcentury ranch houses to neo-traditional, colonial, Mediterranean, and modern custom builds. Many original properties have been renovated or replaced over the decades with larger residences. The neighborhood's quiet, tree-lined streets feature well-kept lawns and mature landscaping.
Community Traditions And Civic Life
Neighborhood governance began fifty years before the civic association when the Castlewood Garden Club formed in October 1954. The Garden Club originally looked after common grounds, created seasonal traditions such as winter holiday greenery sales, and initiated neighborhood security patrols. In September 2003, the Castlewood Civic Association was incorporated to handle growing neighborhood needs, receiving official recognition by the City of Atlanta in January 2004. The association landscaped the local gathering spot known as Triangle Park, where parents often meet children after school. Community events also include annual traditions like Easter egg hunts and major neighborhood Halloween celebrations.
Local Schools And Surrounding Parks
Morris Brandon Elementary School sits right by the neighborhood and serves as an important community hub, connected via wooded walking paths used by families after class. Older public school students attend Sutton Middle School on Northside Parkway and North Atlanta High School. Several private institutions, including The Westminster Schools, The Lovett School, and Pace Academy, are also located nearby. Castlewood borders adjacent communities such as Brandon, Memorial Park, and Argonne Forest. Residents enjoy convenient access to outdoor amenities including Atlanta Memorial Park, Tanyard Creek Park, and the Atlanta BeltLine Northside Trail.
