Housing Stock And Neighborhood Architecture
Leila Valley consists of approximately 200 single-family homes with a median construction year of 1959. Most houses are classic ranch-style homes averaging around 1,100 square feet, often set on sizeable lots with tree-lined yards. Many residents are older homeowners who purchased their properties decades ago, though recent activity includes investors and homeowners remodeling properties into trendy modern styles. Home values for standard ranch houses typically range between $180,000 and $250,000, while completely remodeled properties exceed $300,000. Additionally, the southwestern corner of the neighborhood features a manufactured home park located adjacent to a local water treatment plant.
Public Housing History And Site Transition
The neighborhood has a distinct history tied to Atlanta Housing and federal housing developments. Completed in 1970, the former Leila Valley public housing complex at 2400 Leila Lane comprised 175 residential units under AHA Project GA 6-29 and HUD project number GA006029. It operated under the Low Rent Housing Program for decades, celebrating its 14th anniversary in 1984 and adding new entrance signage in 1994. The housing complex was demolished in 2008, leaving the property vacant for years. That former complex site is now central to new revitalization and mixed-income development plans for the neighborhood.
The Leila Valley Community Farm Initiative
A major focal point of recent neighborhood revitalization is the Leila Valley Community Farm on Locust Lane Southeast. Atlanta Housing partnered with the Food Well Alliance to transform a 7. 4-acre portion of a 14-acre parcel into an innovative food-housing development model. Planned features include a 2. 4-acre native fruit tree orchard, 6,000 square feet of growing space, and ADA-accessible community garden beds. The community farm also incorporates an education pavilion, gathering space, cold storage, equipment storage, grow tunnels, and an irrigation water cube. All fresh produce grown on-site is intended for donation to the local community while supporting biodiversity.
