Recognize The District’s Architectural Variety
The MAK neighborhood association identifies the area as an early Decatur residential neighborhood developed by Mayson and Weekes. It credits architect Leila Ross Wilburn with many houses and highlights the district’s surviving Craftsman examples. The association also distinguishes individually designed Adams Street houses from homes on Kings Highway and surrounding streets that drew on stock designs. That variety is useful context for a move: a familiar exterior style does not establish an identical interior. Oscar recommends photographing the particular entrance, circulation spaces, and finishes at your destination instead of using another MAK house as a template for the crew’s protection or furniture plan.
Create A Surface Protection Inventory
Oscar recommends listing the surfaces that need protection along the complete carrying route. Include thresholds, stair edges, wall corners, door hardware, flooring transitions, and any finish that the owner identifies as vulnerable. Photograph existing marks before delivery and agree on protective methods that will not leave adhesive residue or trap grit against a surface. Keep the inventory specific enough that the crew can act on it, with a photograph number beside each location. Ask who will install and remove the protection and when the route will be checked again. This is a practical property assessment, not an assertion that every MAK residence retains original materials.
Keep Preservation Questions Separate From Delivery
Decatur lists MAK among its local historic districts and provides district-specific supplemental design guidelines. That establishes a preservation framework, not a special neighborhood permit requirement for an ordinary furniture move. Oscar recommends separating the delivery plan from any proposal to change a doorway, railing, porch, or other property feature. If a large item appears not to fit, first discuss disassembly, another existing entrance, or a different placement. Bring any contemplated physical alteration to the owner and appropriate city staff as a separate question. Do not authorize a permanent change simply because a delivery estimate assumed it would be convenient for the moving crew.
